Jacek Malec
Chief Curator

Jacek Malec was born in 1957 in Kalisz, Poland, and graduated in Art History and Museology from the University of Wroclaw. Since 1985, he has lived and worked in Calgary. Malec is a well known art historian, critic, lecturer, and an accomplished curator of numerous exhibitions related to contemporary Canadian and international visual arts, architecture and design. From January 1997 to September 2011 he worked as the Director/Curator at the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts in Calgary, where he organized, curated and administrated – among other curatorial and administrative duties – several international art exhibitions and collaborative projects with Japan, South Korea, Australia, USA, Poland, Sweden, Finland, and Norway.

In the year 2000 – three years into his tenure as the Director/Curator – Malec was instrumental in establishing International Art Exchange Program at the Triangle Gallery, showcasing and promoting works by Calgary’s and Western Canada’s artists and curators on the international scene, and presenting several reciprocal international art exhibitions for the audiences in Calgary. Over the past 11 years of its successful operation, the Triangle’s International Art Exchange Program has presented and promoted over 70 visual artists from Calgary and Western Canada in scholarly researched thematic exhibition in The Netherlands, Greece, Czech Republic, Poland, Republic of Slovakia, China, Portugal and Finland. Each tour has provided a solid base for international networking for those involved, allowing the program to grow, and for cross-border collaborations to flourish. Malec’s role has been critical to the ultimate success of that program as the curator of several international art exchange projects and as the sole administrator of these projects. In 2009, Malec was the curator of one of the key international art exhibitions “Beyond Printmaking: Images in Objects – Experimental Printmaking in Western Canada”, which was presented during the prestigious International Triennale of Graphic Art in Krakow/Poznan in Poland and which received a critical acclaim.

In July of 2011, Malec was part of the senior executive team responsible for a successful transition of the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts into the Museum of Contemporary Art Calgary (MOCA Calgary), where he served as the Managing Director/Associate Curator until September of 2013. Malec is a member of Canadian Chapter of the International Association of Art Critics and a co-founder of Art Forum Gallery in Calgary.
